Work for Accomidation

The guy who checked me in at this Nomad hostel in Noosa was very friendly and I talked to him telling him that I was looking for a job.  He told me about a few local places that might be looking for work.  I'm still looking around but in the meantime he offered me a two week position for work at this hostel.
This was perfect. I could look for work and not waist money staying on the same place.  So I took him up on being a "Glassie".  It isn't the most glorious job.  I work 3 hours from 10 to 1 each night and I get free accommodation.

  2. A glassie basically squeezes his (always male) way through the crowded dance floor to pick up glasses off of tables. After fetching the glasses they must be cleaned. We have a little metal box on one side of the bar that steams the glasses and soaks them in hot water. The glasses must then be stacked to make available for the bar tenders to use again.
That is what I do for most of the night, apart from mopping the floor if something is spilled. At 12 AM everyone is told to "Drink up and f*ck off". After everyone has left and the rest of the glasses have been washed, stacked and put away, we mop the floor and restrooms until they are clean. This usually ends at 1 AM
That is a typical night for a glassie. We have to do other things like changing kegs and fetching ice. The job is exhausting because it is at the end of the day and one must stay on their toes through the whole night.

  4. Thanks for the clarification, Claire and I have been speculating, to your moms dismay, all of our job explanations being wild and savory!
Enjoy reading your blogs...good luck on finding that long term job, meanwhile enjoy the adventures your glassie job brings! Jeannie
